Former GBNET Officer Cassada Sentenced

District Attorney Jackie L. Johnson announces the plea and sentencing of James Cassada in Glynn County Superior Court.Cassada entered a plea of guilty to Two (2) counts of Violation of Oath of Office by a Public Officer.The charges arose out of a GBI investigation into the now disbanded Glynn-Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team (GBNET).Cassada formerly served as a Glynn County Police officer assigned to GBNET.

Superior Court Judge Anthony L. Harrison presided over the case and accepted Cassada’s plea of guilty and sentenced him to serve a total of Ten (10) years, Five (5) years on each count to run consecutive, with a period of 120-180 days to be served in a Probation Detention Center. The remaining balance will be served on probation. Cassada’s request to be sentenced under the Georgia First Offender Act was accepted by Judge Harrison. The case was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney John B. Johnson III.

As part of the sentence, Cassada agreed to testify truthfully in future court proceedings, and to not have contact with any other Glynn County police officers. During the plea hearing, Cassada was called to testify under oath by the State.Cassada provided testimony that is consistent with that of other witnesses and evidence in the GBNET investigation, and has agreed to continue to cooperate with the State in the ongoing investigation.

In addition, the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office transported six inmates from the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections for court proceedings on GBNET related cases before Judge Harrison on Friday. One defendant was granted relief, will be released from prison, and his case dismissed.The remaining five defendants were given information relating to the GBNET investigation and will be making a determination whether to proceed with their motions. Other defendants with motions pending will be heard at a later date.
