Glynn County Names New Police Chief

From Glynn County:

Powell named Police Chief

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga.- Glynn County Manager, Alan Ours, has named John Powell, as Chief of the Glynn County Police Department effective immediately.  Powell has served as Interim Chief since September 1, 2017, and will assume his formal role as Police Chief beginning today.

Powell began his employment with Glynn County as Director of Community Services on January 4, 2016.  As Director of Community Services, Powell managed and supervised all operational areas of the Community Services Department including Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management/Homeland Security, Animal Control, and Recreation and Parks.

Prior to his employment with Glynn County, Powell has demonstrated a strong background in law enforcement management and has served as a law enforcement, public safety, and security consultant at the local, national, and international level.  He was previously employed as the Director of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation.  Powell has also served as Chief of Police for Dothan, Ala., Wilson, N.C., and Hartsville, S.C.  Powell holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Masters of Public Administration and is certified as a Peace Officer in the State of Georgia.  He is also a graduate of the FBI Academy as a Special Agent with FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS) training, and he has maintained police officer certification since 1984.

“I am proud to announce the selection of John Powell as the Chief of the Glynn County Police Department.  This fall, I selected Mr. Powell to fill the role of Interim Police Chief because of his extensive background in law enforcement.  As Interim Chief, Mr. Powell has shown exceptional leadership during this time of transition while directing the department through Hurricane Irma and facilitating the Operations and Management Study being completed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.  Mr. Powell has been able to enhance the working relationship with other law enforcement agencies in Glynn County and build upon the department’s relationship with the media and the public at large.  I am confident Mr. Powell will continue to lead the department with professionalism and promote new and innovative programs as Police Chief,” said County Manager Alan Ours.
