Georgia police department announces officer's death following crash

A Georgia community is mourning the loss of a beloved office. According to a statement from the Fairburn Police Department, Sgt. Jean-Harold Astree died Thursday as a result of a car crash in Douglas County.

"The City is heartbroken due to the tragic loss of Sgt. Astree," said Mayor Mario B. Avery. "Today our City has lost a hero for public safety and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

The 54-year-old officer had been employed with the City of Fairburn since April 2018 and worked with the city previously in 2011.

Sgt. Astree was a decorated officer and who also served the country and was a United States Air Force veteran.

Astree leaves behind a wife and children.
