Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Tuesday (May 13) that he is placing a hold on all Department of Justice (DOJ) nominees from President Donald Trump. This move comes amid questions surrounding a luxury jet gift from Qatar intended for use as Air Force One. Schumer expressed concerns about the ethical and national security implications of accepting the $400 million jet, describing it as "naked corruption" and a "grave national security threat."
The minority leader called for Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify before Congress to explain why the gift does not violate the Emoluments Clause, which prohibits presidents from receiving gifts from foreign states without congressional approval. Schumer demanded answers about the security measures installed on the jet and questioned whether American taxpayers would bear any costs associated with the plane.
While Schumer's hold cannot block the nominees, it can delay their confirmation process. The White House criticized Schumer's actions, accusing him of prioritizing politics over critical DOJ appointments. President Trump defended the gift, calling it a "very nice gesture" and stated that the jet would eventually be given to his presidential library.
Legal experts and some Republican lawmakers have raised concerns about potential security risks and ethical issues. Senator Ted Cruz highlighted espionage concerns, while Senator Shelley Moore Capito advised checking the plane for surveillance devices. The debate continues as the administration works out the legal details of accepting the jet.
