Man in Standoff With State Patrol, Wife's Body in Condo

82 year old Joseph Norwood Hilton was being held Wednesday in the Glynn County Detention Center, charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation with one count each of felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of his wife 83 year old Carol Anne Hilton. The Georgia state patrol office on Jekyll Island was called at about 8:50 yesterday morning to a welfare check at the couple’s condo at Villas By the Sea, on North Beachview Drive. Hilton allegedly told troopers outside the condo that he was armed and that his wife was dead inside. He refused to come out or let troopers in, holding the officers at bay for nearly two hours. The state patrol’s SWAT Team began operations at the scene around 10 a.m. and attempts at negotiations with Hilton continued for nearly an hour. SWAT troopers finally ended the standoff at about 10:50 a.m. taking Hilton into custody without further incident by getting him to open the door. Mrs. Hilton’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah for autopsy.
