Surfers Rescued By Fire Dept.

Going out on a surfboard for the first time, 20 year old Brunswick native Hannah Cope and her boyfriend 26 year old Tyler Redick were rescued by a Glynn County Fire Department rescue boat Tuesday afternoon after being stranded off shore on St. Simons. Cope, who has been on the St. Simons beach many times, and Redick went out at Gould’s Inlet on surfboards and got swept out to sea by the outgoing tide. When they reached the two surfers in a 15-foot inflatable boat, Todd Thompson of the county’s Water Rescue Unit estimated the surfers were about a half a mile out to sea. Redick, an experienced surfer, said they were stranded for nearly two hours in the still-chilly offshore waters before being brought safely back to land.
