St. Marys Doctor Reaches a Plea

Serving life in prison on a felony murder conviction, 56 year old St. Marys physician Noel Chua entered a plea agreement this week for involuntary manslaughter and violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act. Superior Court Judge Anthony Harrison accepted Chua’s guilty plea and sentenced him to 11 years in prison. Chua received credit for the time he has already served since his arrest in 2006, and is now eligible for release. He was serving the life sentence for illegally providing prescription drugs to 19-year-old Jamie Carter III for no apparent medical reasons. The drugs led to Carter’s overdose death in Chua’s St. Marys home in 2005. As a condition of the plea agreement, Chua cannot practice medicine in the state of Georgia is banished from the 11 counties that comprise the Brunswick and Waycross Judicial Circuits.
