Several environmental watchdog groups say there is significant risk associated with Georgia Powerās coal-ash pond clean-ups at Plant McManus in Brunswick and other facilities. The environmentalistsā concern is with dewatering discharge going into nearby bodies of water. The state EPDās Watershed Protection Branch chief said they feel the process is going properly. One watchdog group said Georgia Power needs to update its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit to properly account for the individual toxic elements contained within the coal ash.
