Brunswick’s Urban Redevelopment Agency got a preliminary report this week regarding the potential market far a hotel in downtown. It was reported that there is a strong market for a hotel in conjunction with a conference center but there are some hurdles. Referring to vacant buildings, the consultant said the city needed to deal with the blight. Also, they said downtown needed more and better restaurants and other ancillary business. The full report is expected in about two weeks.In related news, the URA is moving forward with negotiations with Project Newcastle, LLC, the group that proposed constructing the long-planned downtown conference center in the bottom floor of 1612 Newcastle Street. The URA met in closed session this week to discuss purchasing the property from the Kaufman family, who have been renovating the second floor of the building, which they recently purchased.
