A Glynn County Police Officer is facing disciplinary action after being arrested Thursday evening following a domestic dispute.

On Thursday, February 14, 2019, at about 4:15 PM officers responded to the home of 34- year-old Matthew Zakimi after his wife called the police to report he had assaulted her. Supervisors also responded and conducted an investigation into the reported allegations.

As a result of the investigation, Zakimi was arrested and charged with one count of Simple Battery and one count of Criminal Trespass, both under the family violence act. Zakimi’s wife, 43-year-old Joan Zakimi was also arrested and charged with one count of Simple Battery under the family violence act.

Zakimi, an officer with the police department since March 2017, was immediately placed on administrative leave at the time of his arrest. He will remain on administrative leave until the conclusion of an internal investigation into the incident.

“I have been clear since becoming Chief that we must hold ourselves accountable for our actions, as we are held to the same standards as every other citizen”, said Police Chief John Powell. “I commend the staff who responded to the incident for taking the appropriate action”, Powell said.
