Update on Mall Shooting

From Glynn County Police:

On Saturday, March 24, 2018, at about 10:15PM police received a call about a possible active shooter at a carnival in the parking lot of Colonial Mall at Glynn Place in Brunswick. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. Inmost cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.” Due to the initial information reported to the Glynn Brunswick E911 Center, a unified response to the call occurred by officers from multiple agencies, including the Glynn County Police Department, Brunswick Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and Glynn County Schools Police. Emergency medical personnel from the Glynn County Fire Department also responded.Officers on scene quickly determined that there was no active shooter, as initially reported.Officers did find a 16-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The victim was stabilized on scene by emergency medical personnel, and transported via helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Savannah. The victim was treated for his injuries overnight and released from the hospital. At this time, there are no other known gunshot victims. The investigation thus far has indicated that the shooting was as a result of a fight between two teenagers. Investigators worked throughout the night, and the investigation is still ongoing. Glynn County Police Chief John Powell wants those in the community who commit violent acts such as this to know it will not be tolerated. “The Glynn County Police Department will work with other partner law enforcement agencies in Glynn County to aggressively investigate and prosecute these senseless acts of violence. Families should be able to enjoy activities within the Golden Isles without fear of those who have no regard for innocent lives”, Powell said.Investigators are asking anyone who was at the carnival at the time of the shooting that may have cell phone video or information about the incident to come forward, and contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 912-554-7802 or the Silent Witness line at 912-264-1033
