Police Vote Will Be On Main Ballot

The Board of Elections voted this afternoon to follow the advice of Georgia Secretary of State attorney Ryan Germany and rescinded last Friday’s vote to hold a separate special election for the Senate Bill 509 referendum. Voting in favor of rescinding last week’s special election vote were Chairwoman Patty Gibson and members Tommy Clark, Keith Rustin, and Patricia Featherstone. Sandy Dean was the lone no vote. A second motion was then made to place SB 509 on theNov. 3general election ballot. Germany’s letter to the board stated that the SB 509 referendum should not be considered a special election. The vote was again four to one with Ms. Dean the lone vote. Attorneys for Glynn County Richard Strickland and Brad Watkins sent a letter to the election board on behalf of Glynn County stating that the county would not pay for or support the special election called for by SB 509. The letter cited logistical and monetary problems and the fact that Glynn County opposes SB 509. The letter states SB 509 violates the Georgia Constitution by seeking to withdraw the County’s power to establish and maintain its police department.
