Gov. Abbott identified the shooter as Salvador Ramos, 18, who was "believed" to be killed by responding officers.

Local authorities confirmed "some people" died in the shooting, however, did not provide a confirmed total during a press conference held on Tuesday (May 24) afternoon.

An active shooter is reported at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School announced in a post shared on its Facebook account Tuesday (May 24).

"There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary," the district wrote. "Law enforcement is on site. Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus. As soon as more information is gathered it will be shared.

"The rest of the district is under a Secure Status."

The district had previously announced that all schools were "under a lockdown status due to gunshots in the area," prior to specifically mentioning the active shooter's presence at Robb Elementary.

“Parents please do not pick up students at this time. You will be notified to pick up students once all are accounted for,” the district wrote on its Facebook page.

The Uvalde Police Department also confirmed the scene remained active as of 12:23 local time and that students were being transferred for reunification, citing the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School's previous post.

Uvalde is located approximately 85 miles west of San Antonio and has an estimated population of about 16,001 as of 2019.

Robb Elementary School has an enrollment of just under 600 students, according to the Associated Press.
