An NBA announcer apologized after he making a shocking reference to the wrong man as Kevin Porter Jr.'s father during Wednesday night's game between the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards.
"You've got to give credit. Kevin Porter Jr., like his dad, pulled that trigger right at the right time," Wizards announcer Glenn Consor said after the Houston point guard scored a last-second game-winning three-point shot.
According to court documents obtained by USA Today, Porter Jr.'s father, Brian Kevin Porter Sr., pleaded guilty in 1993 to the killing of a 14-year-old girl. Porter Sr. was reportedly shot and killed in Seattle in 2004.
Consor tweeted Thursday (January 6) that he mistakenly thought Porter Jr.'s father was a former NBA player who played several seasons in Washington back in the 1970s and early 1980s.
"I have reached out to Kevin to personally apologize and hope to be able to talk to him soon," Consor said, who added that he didn't realize how insensitive or hurtful his words were.
The comment drew backlash from LeBron James who called out Consor online.
"Oh he thought this was cool huh!!?? Nah we ain't going for this," James tweeted. "Sorry but this ain't going to fly! How insensitive can you be to say something like this. Beat it man! I pray for you but there's no place in our beautiful game for you!"
Kevin Porter Jr. is a 2019 first round pick drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks from USC. He made his NBA debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers after being traded. He was traded again during his second season with the Cavs where he picked up in the second round by the Houston Rockets.
