After burning for a month and consuming 140,000 acres, FEMA has authorized federal funds to reimburse the State of Georgia for costs to fight the West Mims Fire in Charlton County. Grant funding will be available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire. Emergency costs for evacuations, sheltering, police barricading and traffic control are also eligible. The Charlton County evacuation area has now been expanded to include the entire southern half of the county, including more than 1,000 residents and over 250 homes.
